Pedagogy

At Barrhead High we strive to remove barriers to learning while delivering an aspirational curriculum which ‘raises the barr’ for all.’’ This means delivering excellent learning and teaching experiences.

We are committed to providing the highest quality experiences for all young people. As a learning community our aim is to create exciting, challenging and effective learning experiences that provide learners with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful at all stages of the curriculum and in the future world of work.

At Barrhead High we have designed a toolkit to guide and support practitioners to deliver excellent experiences for young people, drawing on practice developed within the school learning community through collaborative enquiry. The toolkit is designed as a resource to support staff in the consistent high quality delivery of a range of key methodologies and approaches, that we know, when delivered effectively, provide the greatest positive impact on the learner https://sites.google.com/er.glow.scot/bhslearningpolicy?usp=sharing

Our teachers are also committed to coaching and providing regular, actionable feedback to ensure consistent approaches across the school. We have invested in a professional learning programme to embed structured coaching cycles, prioritising staff engagement, and aligning coaching with whole-school priorities, the school has created a sustainable model for continuous improvement. With thoughtful planning, clear communication, and a phased approach, Instructional Coaching has led to meaningful change.

Self-evaluation for self-improvement

Staff and learners understand that self-evaluation is an integral aspect of our approach to continuous improvement. They participate in the peer observation programme to provide opportunities to learn from each other.  Feedback is via a coaching conversation to drive forward changes to learning and teaching.

Practitioner Enquiry

Across the school all staff are leaders of learning and a commitment to improving pedagogy and a collegiate learning culture is evident. Opportunities for learners and staff to regularly engage in critical and creative thinking are embedded via practitioner enquiry. This involves:
•  Identifying  an issue or observation to form an enquiry question.
•  Collect data
•  Carry out professional reading and research
•  Identify interventions or strategies to be trialled
•  Analyse results
•  Share findings

Continuous Learning and Professional Development

An extensive programme of in-house, local authority and national CLPL is available to all to support improvement priorities, and drive creativity and innovation across the school.

A learning and teaching group, led by teaching staff and learners, also provides an opportunity for sharing expertise and driving innovation to engage all learners based on research.
